Maxis announced its Kongsi Home Project back in January 26th to help build homes for the underprivileged, in partnership with EPIC Homes and top Malaysian e-commerce sites like GEMFIVE, HappyFresh, Lazada, Rakuten, and ZALORA. Rakuten Malaysia is no longer around, so that’s four left. It later renamed the initiative to #GongXiHome, to be in line with the Chinese New Year celebrations on February 8th and 9th, 2016.
The #GongXiHome Project began during the announcement itself, where altruistic folks can buy products and materials from the said four e-commerce stores, that will then be donated to EPIC Homes for their home-building projects. Not limited to just building homes for the needy, on February 3rd, Maxis also partnered with local NGO Kechara Food Bank, and brought more than its 200 volunteers to help pack and deliver 100 food boxes to 100 poor urban families across the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor. These families in need were identified by Kechara Food Bank, and the 100 boxes that were distributed contained essential food items such as canned food, cereal, and rice.
Mariam Bevi Batcha, Maxis’ Head of Corporate Affairs, said, “This is more than just about helping the needy. It gave us the opportunity to go to the ground to see for ourselves and do something meaningful in the true spirit of volunteerism. It was certainly an eye-opening experience to be able to directly interact with and help those in need.”
This effort by Maxis and partnership with Kechara weren’t new to the company; in July 2015, Maxis also undertook #ProjectNourish, where around 150 Maxis volunteers assisted Kechara and another NGO called Pertiwi, to distribute food packs and drinks to the homeless and poor, around the urban areas of the Klang Valley and Kuala Lumpur City Centre.
Maxis also said that besides nudging its employees to do volunteer work during festive seasons throughout the year, the telco also encourages its employees to take part in its Corporate Responsibility program called eKelas which started in March 2013. eKelas is an after-school digital learning program, where it aims to bring a fun and vibrant way to learning, delivered through live tuition in a self-paced studying style.
Maxis Kongsi Home Project or #GongXiHome, is said to run until March 31st 2016, and at this point, only 2.5 EPIC Homes were built. To offer your help, visit: http://www.maxis.com.my/kongsihome.
