On September 17th, 2014, local carrier U Mobile Sdn. Bhd. announced its ‘Vision 2 Million’ campaign — the company’s initiative to add two million new subscribers to its existing customer base by the end of this year, or specifically December 31st, 2014.
To kick-start this campaign, U Mobile will commit to offering its subscribers (presumably all of them) free on-net calls, and free mobile internet for a day on January 1st, 2015, should the company achieve the goal.
Pulling other mobile users to switch to U Mobile, the telco helps to ease the move with its Mobile Number Portability (MNP) migration, plus giving new prepaid customers “free” internet for a year. Those who switch from September 16th onwards can get 250MB of data for every RM30 reload, for one year.
To streamline the switch, U Mobile is also deploying an online MNP service. Switchers could easily purchase a new SIM pack from any authorized U Mobile distributors, login to U Mobile’s site to fill in the required information, and wait for an SMS to confirm that the old SIM card’s number has been ported over. Once done, the new U Mobile account will also receive a RM3 mobile credit.
There is also this new Friend Referral Program, because you know, there will be greater savings for calls and texts within the same network. Existing subscribers can obtain the Friend Referral Code by dialing *114# or loading http://www.u.com.my/mgm, pass it to a friend, and when the friend switches to U Mobile, she has to dial the same USSD number *114# to enter the referral code. By doing so, both parties will receive a RM3 credit, but the introducer will receive 10% of the top-up amount made by that friend for the next six months.

In light of the campaign, we are introducing brand new promotions that reward our customers when they switch to our services, as well as our refreshed Friend Referral Program. Furthermore, we have lots of surprises in our pipeline which we will roll out soon, which will benefit our customers immensely,” said Jasmine Lee, Chief Marketing Officer of U Mobile.
Lee added, “Being a consumer-centric telco, we constantly reinvent our approach for the market, and adapt ourselves according to the latest trends and directions, catering our services to meet their demands. We will continue to explore more avenues and opportunities to engage with our customers, and elevate their user experience with U Mobile.”
The announcement came in fresh after U Mobile’s network expansion plan that happen just two weeks ago, where it covers the rollout of roughly 1,000 3G and 1,000 4G LTE sites, aimed at delivering a better network coverage and quality.
This new ‘Vision 2 Million’ initiative is much more ambitious as it requires an aggressive marketing campaign to encourage mobile users to jump onto the U Mobile bandwagon. However if successful, it will drive a greater business growth for the telco as far as its subscription base and market presence are concerned.
U Mobile was one of the exhibitors at the KL Converge 2014, which was held on September 17th to 19th at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Booth PE04, Hall 5. Other carriers that were present include DiGi, where its Chairman had a keynote address there to talk about their expansion roadmap as well.
