Digi today launched its new Internet Sharing option for families to share internet quota between primary/principal line and up to 6 supplementary/member lines. The features is available now to all postpaid plans, including the cheapest Digi Postpaid 28 plan, and requires a minimum subscription of RM 10/month to activate the sharing option. However, Digi Postpaid 28 and Digi Postpaid 48 plans under the ‘More Calls & SMS’ rate plan will have to fork out an additional RM 10/month for the Unlimited Calls feature. To get Internet Sharing, owners of the would-be primary line are required to walk into a Digi Store and request for the activation of the service.
Digi’s Internet Sharing feature requires that the primary line be subscribed to any one of Digi’s new Postpaid plans, as well as to ensure that all would-be member lines have Mobile Internet and are not prepaid lines. For the plans and the monthly rates, please refer to the image below from Digi’s FAQ section:
If the rates above are correct, the absolute minimum that the primary line needs to get started is RM 38/month, but this only applies to Digi Postpaid 28 subscribers who have signed up with the ‘More Internet’ rate plan. However, with ‘More Call & SMS’, the monthly commitment for the primary line starts at RM 48 whereby, as mentioned previously, the higher rate goes towards the bundled unlimited voice call feature that applies to both on and off-net Malaysian numbers, including fixed lines (the feature excludes calls to special numbers, to toll-free 1-300/1-800 numbers, as well as video calls). On the other hand, the Unlimited Calls feature is not available separately and as such, those on More Internet rate plans are stuck with whatever the call minutes their plan comes with.
As for the supplementary lines, it can start at RM 10/month for the Gadget SIM option no matter the rate plan. This option gives the member line the ability to only share the primary line’s internet quota. If the member line needs to have the ability to send and receive call/SMS, then the Family SIM is the way to go. This one comes with a monthly charge of RM 38 but it includes unlimited calls.
Allocating the shared data to all member lines are also quite simple. Primary line owners will need to install MyDigi App (available on iOS and Android) and have to allocate at least 100 MB to each member line, or else the default for all lines will be the maximum data quota; meaning the member lines will be able to use up the entire data quota given to the primary line. While members are allowed to view their data allocations and usages, only the owners will able to control the allocations.
To be able to enjoy the privileges that come with the Internet Sharing feature, the Primary lines need to have at least one member line. Without it, the options to get unlimited calls to all networks, and to purchase those competitively priced Extra internet packs (12 GB for RM 50, 7 GB for RM 35, and 0.5 GB for RM 5), will not be made available. See image below for all available plans and their respective data quotas:
Although Internet Sharing is a welcome addition to Digi’s offering, there’s still one major problem with its implementation. Activating Internet Sharing will disable the Internet rollover feature! Once activated, any remaining internet quota will have to be used up before the next cycle.
