Telekom Malaysia (TM) published a news release on May 10th, 2016, to announce its recent signing ceremony with Hurricane Electric (HE) in Chicago, USA, that establishes a “strategic partnership” between the two, to help deliver high-speed internet broadband services to emerging Asian markets.

Being one of the major providers of fiber network throughout the Asian region, TM is said to be well-positioned to assist in the growth of HE’s footprint in Asia, especially since TM is a participating member in major regional undersea cable projects, including BBG, MCT, SMW5, among others. As part of the agreement terms, TM will leverage on its ownership of multiple submarine cable systems in the Asia-Pacific region, to link major cities with growing markets around Asia.

In return for the expanded network, HE will enable TM to increase its IP reach globally. HE is one of, if not the world’s largest IPv6-native “internet backbone” and with its help, it could offer a platform for TM to expand on its ‘Beyond Connectivity’ initiative, which includes TM‘s video streaming services like HyppTV. This partnership between TM and HE will also help the former’s High-speed Broadband Phase 2 (HSBB2) and Suburban Broadband (SUBB) projects, as well as benefiting TM‘s subsidiary, Packet One Networks (P1), now known as webe.

Mohamad Rozaimy Abd. Rahman, Executive Vice President, TM Global & Wholesale, commented on this agreement, “This strategic agreement between TM and Hurricane Electric harnesses the strengths of both companies, positioning each of them to lead the Asia-Pacific market in emerging technologies. Particularly compelling, TM‘s partnership with Hurricane Electric facilitates the successful rollout of TM‘s 100 Mbps UniFi Pro and UniFi Biz Pro services to the Malaysian consumer and enterprise markets — strengthening TM‘s position as a market leader in delivering converged IP-based services.”

Mike Leber, Hurricane Electric’s Chief Executive Officer, added, “This agreement propels both TM and HE forward in their shared objective to create and deliver next-generation IP-based services to users throughout Asia. In addition to greatly expanding HE’s network reach in Asia-Pacific, we look forward to our partnership with TM, opening opportunities for the companies to collaborate on new and exciting projects in the future.”
