Just like Google X and its “moonshot” projects, it now appears that our very own Digi is taking a similar path, to create or construct “digitally adjacent businesses and competencies”, with its newly-formed Digi-X division. In simplified terms, this new division will be responsible for creating new revenue sources that will supplement or feed Digi’s core businesses.

Led by its Chief Digital Officer Praveen Rajan, who according to Digi has been the company’s digital advocate for a long time, the Digi-X initiative has been tasked to not only create standalone digital businesses and to build/monetise other digital platforms for the outfit, but also to develop new business streams by way of acquisition and investments. In addition, Digi also plans to further strengthen its digital partnerships as well as its involvement in the local startup scene.

“We have an ambition to transform into a digital company and become our customers’ favourite partner in digital life by 2020. This requires us to explore new areas beyond our traditional telco realm, in addition to fuelling innovation within our core business. Digi-X will dream up and bring to life projects and businesses independent of Digi — from adjacent services to new digital verticals that could someday become part of our core business. This is a major move in our digital playbook, and you will see us taking giant leaps forward in this area in months to come”, said Digi’s Chief Executive Officer Albern Murty when commenting on the announcement.

Investing in startup ecosystem and running ‘coding camps’ is nothing new for Digi. It had in the past launched its own Digi Accelerate programme and is currently organising the 7th edition of its Digi Challenge for Change. Digi is now demonstrating its commitment further with the establishment of the first incubator programme that focuses on East Malaysian tech entrepreneurs, called Incub8, which was unveiled right after the Digi-X announcement. These initiatives and investments towards the future generation show how Digi is working to ensure the continued growth of this country and, by extension, its businesses itself.

During the course of over the nine years he’s been with Digi, Praveen is said to have held several leadership positions that were primarily within the marketing team, and was in charge of Postpaid, Devices, Value Added Services, and Partnerships. Prior to that, he was the co-founder and also the Chief Technology Officer at LifeLogger. Praveen had this to say about the name of the division: “X signifies some of the unknown, some of the impossible, and some of the improbable. It stands for everything that Digi can be and achieve beyond being a telco”.
