A couple months ago on September 10th, U Mobile partnered with Telin Malaysia, a Malaysian MVNO and a local subsidiary of PT Telkom Indonesia to launch KartuAs 2-in-1, a SIM card with two numbers to provide voice, messaging, and data services for Indonesian customers to contact home.
Folks who sign up on Kartu 2-in-1 get to enjoy “competitive” IDD rates to Indonesia, due to the two carriers it supports — U Mobile and PT Telkom Indonesia. That also means users will have two phone numbers (obviously one for Malaysia and the other for Indonesia). Because of the local Indonesian number too, loved ones in Indonesia will only be paying their local rates when they call the KartuAs 2-in-1’s Indonesian number.
U Mobile said that this partnership is mutually beneficial as Telin Malaysia can leverage on the customer base of its parent, PT Telkom Indonesia, said to be the largest telco operator in Indonesia.
Telin Malaysia is also appreciative of U Mobile in making KartuAs 2-in-1 possible, considering there are currently approximately 1 million Indonesians living in Malaysia. They also claim that there is no better option in the market today when it comes to this kind of service.
With this partnership, Telin Malaysia will be U Mobile’s third MVNO or mobile virtual network operator, fourth if you’re including BuzzMe. BuzzMe was the first, probably followed by FRiENDi, and then Clixster. BuzzMe is no longer around after Enabling Asia — its mobile virtual network aggregator (MVNA) — was merged with Clixster, presumably subsuming BuzzMe.
Before the new Budget 2016 kicks in, the recommended retail price for KartuAs 2-in-1 starter pack is RM10.60 (inclusive of 6% GST, of course). It comes with only 5 minutes of free IDD calls to Indonesia upon activation, and is bundled with RM5 and Rp2,000 of credits to attached to the Malaysian and Indonesian numbers, respectively.
