Update on 4th January 2016: Unfortunately, the extra gigabyte was only up to 31st December 2015. Current plans show up without the extra GB and has even been removed from the quota of existing users.
Ookla, the folks behind the Speedtest.net broadband testing and analysis tool, released their latest Speedtest Awards winners and they’ve picked U Mobile as their top choice in their Fastest Mobile Network category for Malaysia. To celebrate the occasion, U Mobile has now added 1 GB data, for free, to all prepaid, postpaid, and broadband plans. The offer is valid for new subscribers who sign up before the 31st of December 2015, but existing subscribers will not have to worry about a thing as their plans have been upgraded automatically. The extra gigabyte will be provided monthly for as long as the user is actively subscribed to any of U Mobile’s monthly data plans.
U Mobile’s CEO, Wong Heang Tuck, said, “U Mobile believes in offering best value mobile data plans with the best customer experience. This approach is working very well for us as we have won several accolades this year and most recently, Ookla recognised U Mobile as having the fastest mobile network in Malaysia. It is testament that we are indeed providing the best mobile customer experience possible to all Malaysians. #DATASTRONGNETWORK!”.
The plans that come with the 1 GB free internet are as follows:
The Ookla Speedtest utilises hundreds of testing locations from around the world and is available for free to everyone. Currently, the service performs over 5 million tests every day, and is available on the web as well as iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Amazon apps.
To pick the winners for the awards, Speedtest ran over 1,000,000,000 tests that covered over 40,000 ISPs and 1,500 Mobile Networks. The tests only included providers that have a significant number of customers in an area, which meant that the telcos or ISPs should meet a minimum threshold for the country it’s operating in to be selected. The threshold requires that these companies hit the specified number of unique devices testing each day, over a period of 6 months. The speeds recorded by the devices are aggregated by averaging the results from the devices and users’ locations in order eliminate users or telcos from ‘gaming’ the system with repeated tests. This aggregation method, among others, also helped to improve the accuracy of the collected data over extended periods. For mobile networks, the ranking is based on the average download performance of the fastest technology that is available in the tested countries. This led Ookla to test primarily in only LTE speeds instead of taking into account other data technologies. (For countries that Ookla tested on speeds other than LTE, the results will come with an indication of the technology that was used.)
On a separate note, U Mobile also announced that the Sultan of Johor, D.Y.M.M. Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj (DYMM Sultan Ibrahim) has increased his stake in the company by a further 5%, bringing his total to 15%. U Mobile’s Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan commented that the investment reflects DYMM Sultan Ibrahim’s confidence in the performance of the company, and hopes that the decision will, in return, contribute positively on the future direction of U Mobile. DYMM Sultan Ibrahim’s previous 10% ownership of U Mobile was first acquired in 2014.
