For this Chinese New Year, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Maxis is partnering with top Malaysian e-commerce sites and EPIC Homes to raise funds to build homes via its Kongsi Home Project. This initiative will benefit rural Malaysian families who do not have a house to call home, or are living in unsafe abodes. The project began last Tuesday and will continue until the 31st of March, 2016.
The mechanics of this crowdfunding is pretty simple. First, interested parties will need to visit any of the 5 participating Malaysian e-commerce sites: Lazada, ZALORA, GEMFIVE, Rakuten, and HappyFresh. There, one will be able to purchase any of the 5 funkily-named products/materials (whose names also play on the CNY festivity and Feng Shui) for only RM 8/pack. The parts, named ‘Gold With The Flow Tap’, ‘Like A Boss Papan’, ‘Lockdown Your Love Doorknob’, ‘Window Of Longevity’, and ‘Confirm Nail The Job Nail’, will then be donated to EPIC Homes for its projects. Maxis will forward its entire proceeds from the Kongsi Home Project to EPIC Homes. For those who prefer other avenues to make a contribution, you’ll be happy to know that Maxis is also planning to introduce donations via the MyMaxis or Hotlink RED apps at a later date.

“Some people think homelessness is one of those problems too big for any one of us to solve. However we at Maxis believe the Internet makes it easier for us to join forces and start making a difference. Imagine: if just 5% of Malaysia’s 7 million online shoppers donated RM8 via the Kongsi Home Project, we’d be able to crowdfund enough building materials to build new homes for 50 families. If Chinese New Year is about family, then the Kongsi Home project is a good reminder to always think about other less fortunate Malaysians as our family too,” said Sulin Lau, Maxis Head of Marketing Services.
For the Kongsi Home Project, the recipients of the homes will be chosen from a predetermined priority list from each of the villages that EPIC Homes works in. Efforts are concentrated on projects in Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Kelantan, and Negeri Sembilan for now but EPIC hopes to be able to build homes in the whole of Malaysia in the future. EPIC Homes has plans to roll out to Sabah and Sarawak too when the company’s capacity increases, and will be more than happy to work with potential partners specialising in construction, supply chain, and development in those Borneo states when the time comes.
“This is a great step towards creating awareness amongst the urban communities, about the needs, the culture and lifestyles of those in the rural areas. When we’re able to achieve building homes for every single family in our country, you’ll know that your little action was part of something big. And I believe that would also change your life,” said John-son Oei, CEO/Founder, EPIC Homes.
According to Maxis, each EPIC home requires 2,000 nails, 500 wooden planks, 10 windows, 4 water taps, 3 doorknobs, and RM 42,000. This is not including the 10 volunteer home builders that EPIC Homes needs to complete a build. To see EPIC’s past projects, do visit their portfolio page for photos and info.
