While U Mobile Sdn. Bhd. (U Mobile) is well known as the the most dynamic carrier/telco in Malaysia, it hasn’t yet catch up with the competition when it comes to nationwide coverage, but it is striving to change that stance. On May 3rd, U Mobile announced its partnership with SACOFA Sdn. Bhd. (SACOFA) at Pullman Hotel in Kuching, for the former to leverage upon the latter’s telecoms infrastructure of over 700 sites statewide, as well as its bandwidth leasing service, to accelerate U Mobile’s network expansion and service quality in Sarawak.
SACOFA is said to be the company that has the exclusive rights to construct, own, and manage communication infrastructures in Sarawak. As part of the agreement, SACOFA will deliver built-to-suit sites, and provide U Mobile its bandwidth leasing services over a period of 10 years. The partnership will also allow U Mobile to save its operational costs while reducing environmental impact.
U Mobile Chief Executive Officer Wong Heang Tuck noted that this partnership is timely, given the fact that they’ve just gotten the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum allocated to them for the first time, “The partnership is timely as SACOFA will be a key facilitator for our network expansion using the new 1800 MHz and 900 MHz frequency spectrum which was allocated to U Mobile by the government early this year. We expect to switch on these frequencies on January 1st 2017 and July 1st 2017 respectively. This tie-up with SACOFA signifies our increasing commitment to East Malaysia.”
SACOFA Managing Director Zaid Zaini said that they are well-positioned to be the enabler of service providers to widen their reach and the net result echoes the state government’s target to have quality and affordable communications services to as many people as possible, “SACOFA’s current extensive network of towers and fiber optic infrastructure which spans across the entire state of Sarawak, will cut down the rollout time for those service offerings quite considerably which will greatly benefit U Mobile. We are also confident the significant reduction in speed of deployment and the ensuing cost savings for these services rollouts will further boost competition, resulting in enhanced quality and lower cost of mobile connectivity to the Rakyat.”
