Malaysia’s young carrier U Mobile just announced its “full-fledged” nationwide network expansion with the rollout of a total of 2,000 sites. This initiative is in a bid to address the growing demands of its customers, particularly the every-increasing smartphone users even in rural areas. The investment will also cover improvements in existing network infrastructure, and together with the expansion, U Mobile hopes that it’ll provide a wide coverage, fast mobile internet, and uninterrupted connectivity to its customers, while keeping the subscription prices competitive.
U Mobile said this major undertaking involves roughly an equal split of 1,000 3G and 1,000 4G LTE sites, covering strategic areas and key cities within Wilayah Persekutuan, Selangor, Seremban, Port Dickson, Nilai, Ipoh, Lumut, Penang, Johor Bahru, Muar, Kluang, Segamat, and Batu Pahat. When questioned, U Mobile said that it is focusing its expansion in Peninsular Malaysia for now, and the project will only cover East Malaysia “in the next phase”.

Wong Heang Tuck, Chief Executive Officer of U Mobile said, “While we may be the youngest among all the telcos, our commitment to innovation and bringing the best mobile and user experience to all our customers have certainly pushed us to achieve more in a shorter duration of time. We love being the challenger brand as it makes us move forward without losing sight of our goal of continuously investing into our customers, people, and infrastructure”.
U Mobile further noted that it never loses sight on its bottom line and plans to grow its business further, expecting to grab a market share of 10% and a revenue increase 50% by the time this expansion project is fully completed at the end of 2015.
“With a total investment of RM1.5 billion, the expansion is aimed at enhancing U Mobile’s quality of service through wider network coverage while delivering the best mobile experience through more innovative products and services,” Wong added.
Besides all of the expansion talks today, U Mobile also touched on the fact that it has recently just completed the upgrade of its Business Support Systems which involved a migration to a new billing platform. This enables it an end-to-end real-time tracking of its business as well as customer/order fulfillment. U Mobile is confident that with all these in place, it is on track for further growth, giving it a competitive edge in the fast-paced mobile industry.
