U Mobile Hero P98 #30GBofFun

U Mobile just revealed its new Hero P98 Postpaid plan on July 1st, 2016. The plan will give you a massive, 30 GB of all-day data, on top of the unlimited calls, the free Video-Onz streaming data allocation, and other perks we’re going to touch on later. This plan was leaked about a week ago, but it is now live on U Mobile’s Postpaid page.

As the plan’s name suggests, U Mobile Hero P98 Postpaid is a postpaid plan for RM98 per month. Just like most top-tier postpaid plans from itself or from the competition, Hero P98 comes with unlimited calls to all networks.

U Mobile Hero P98 Video-Onz

The free Video-Onz has been extended to December 31st, 2016, and Hero P98, along with Hero P70, i90, and i130, will get unlimited video streaming to 18 different partner sites, including YouTube, iflix, Astro on the Go, HyppTV, tonton, among others. A peculiar addition is that only the Hero P98 comes with ‘Free Video Subscription’, but at the time of writing, I’m still unable to figure out what’s the free stuff that other plans like P70 and P50 don’t get. In any case, the P98 Free Video Subscription promotion runs from July 1st until the 31st of 2016.

Update (July 1st, 2016, 1 PM): As of now, only one video subscription is available free for Hero P98, which is a 30-day Viu subscription worth RM10. Which is weird because Video-Onz already gives you 60 days of premium access to HyppTV and Viu.

Update (July 1st, 2016, 6 PM): While the free Video-Onz perk for all plans is still extended until the end of the year for all plans, U Mobile P70’s unlimited Video-Onz will end on July 31st, 2016. It will then revert to 7 GB, to match the plan’s base data allocation, same as P50 and U28.

U Mobile Hero P98 offers

Of course, one of the killer feature of P98 is its generous 30 GB monthly data allocation. It should be worth pointing out that unlike P70, where its 7 + 8 GB data will only be valid until the end of the year, P98 doesn’t seem to have an end date, or at least, it hasn’t been announced yet. But who are we kidding? These things change all the time and I’m sure U Mobile will revise its postpaid plans yet again in a few months’ time.

When Yes tagged along Samsung’s event to announce its 4G LTE network launch on June 15th, all of a sudden the competition gets a little tighter, now that there are a total of six mobile network operators (MNO) in Malaysia (Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, webe, and Yes). It is obvious that U Mobile’s Hero P98 is an answer to Yes, especially since Yes’ 4G LTE service just went official yesterday. Yes Postpaid 98 offers 32 GB of data per month, but only 8 GB on 4G LTE and the other 24 GB is on its “4G Broadband” (read: WiMAX).

However, look closer and you’ll find that apart from Yes, U Mobile’s new plan effectively one-ups every other telco plans out there today, in terms of price-to-data ratio. Maxis may arguably have the most reliable network among the bunch (a loose term right there), but its highest MaxisONE 188 plan “only” offers 20 GB for RM188 per month. Celcom’s new FIRST Platinum, for RM150 per month, has 18 GB allocated but it is broken down to 9 GB all-day data plus 9 GB that can only be used during weekends. Digi does have a 30 GB plan, but this Digi Postpaid 238 ‘More Internet’ costs RM238 per month.

Meanwhile, the P1-rebranded webe had the chance to launch their plans earlier, way before Celcom FIRST Platinum, the revamped MaxisONE plans, and Digi Postpaid 238, but chose not to announce anything until yesterday. It is either very slow on webe’s part to roll out its 4G LTE network, or an incredibly brilliant move to wait until all telcos have laid their cards on the table, before showing its hand. webe just revealed its plan which is pricier than U Mobile Hero P98 (or cheaper, for existing TM/webe subscribers), but offers a lot more data.

If there is one single drawback to U Mobile Hero P98, besides its coverage area, it would be the plan’s lack of at least an unlimited one-net SMS perk, unlike the rest of the competition mentioned earlier. Otherwise, U Mobile Hero P98 also comes with other perks and enhancements like Wi-Fi Calling, free data access to Waze, Hero Plus supplementary lines, plus roaming features like Data Backpack and U Data Roam.
