Digi has officially launched its 4G LTE service for Sarawak last week and now covers 3 of its major cities: Kuching, Miri, and Bintulu. With the launch, Digi subscribers in those areas will now get to experience high-speed internet connections if their mobile devices support the 2600 MHz frequency (Band 7).

According to Digi, internet-savvy Sarawakians are among the highest data users on its network. This was why Digi had to fast-track their expansion plan for this particular region to help meet the demands of the growing market. In Kuching alone, Digi’s LTE covers 72% of the populated areas and there are plans for more. Digi’s two other aforementioned locations as well as two new additional sites, Sibu and Samarahan, have all been earmarked for expansions in the coming months. By the end of the year, the telco provider hopes to bring LTE connection to 42% of Sarawak’s populated zones, as well as its 3G coverage to 71%. This will make LTE connection in Sarawak much better than the Digi’s nationwide coverage, that now stands at 32% of populated areas. Sarawakians will have to make do with a lower percentage for 3G coverage though than Digi’s national average of 86%.

Coverage alone is not Digi’s selling point here as it has committed itself in delivering speeds of at least 5 Mbps at 80-percent of the time. It has also committed to deliver LTE connections to both its prepaid and postpaid customers.

During the launch, Digi hosted a three-day roadshow at Plaza Merdeka in Kuching where users got to sign-up for the new DG SmartPlans, iDiGi and Broadband plans. Customer were able to purchase devices like the premium iPhone 6 as well as those that come free with a DG SmartPlan, such as the Lenovo A606, Meizu MX4, and Honor 6. Also at the roadshow, existing Digi subscribers were given a free upgrade to LTE SIM for those who already had an LTE device.

Digi hopes that these new connectivity options will provide faster access to knowledge, information, news, and that it’ll also help to further drive socio-economics in Sarawak.
