Maxis has recently announced the ‘It’s Not OK to be OK’ campaign to strive to improve its existing services, and recently it has launched a new roaming tier that may reflect this mantra, named DataRoam Saver. It is an opt-in roaming service that gives you 50MB for RM10 a day in 16 countries, namely Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, Macau, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UK, and Vietnam.
Opting in is as easy as dialing the USSD code *100# > select ‘International Roaming’ > pick destination under ‘List of Countries’ > then ‘Buy Data Roam Saver’ > and ‘Buy’. Optionally, an SMS to 20008 with the text “buy datasaver
The 50MB will be served at the fastest speed offered by Maxis’ partner carrier abroad. When the data runs out, the speed will be throttled to just 32kbps, which is actually only half the speed of #Hotlink that offers 64kbps locally, but should still be sufficient for your basic messaging needs.
To continue enjoying high speed data abroad, there is always DataRoam Pass that costs RM38 per day and covers 106 countries. As a side note, Maxis’ LTE roaming is now available in seven countries: Brunei (DST), Japan (NTT Docomo), Hong Kong (CSL), Philippines (Globe), Singapore (Singtel), South Korea (SK TElecom), and Taiwan (TWM).
DataRoam Pass is actually an auto-subscription service, but with DataRoam Saver available now, you can opt to pay just a quarter of that for some basic connectivity while you’re in those 16 countries mentioned. The latter is similar to U Mobile’s Free Internet Roaming that was announced a few months ago, which gives you the 50MB for free, though it only covers seven countries as of now.
