In a move than could be taken as a misstep, or perhaps as bowing down to customer pressure, or maybe even as a genuine gesture to serve the customers’ needs, TM has gone back on its previous decision to halve the upload speeds when it introduced its all-new UniFi ADVANCE PLAN. In less than 4 months after the introduction, the all-new UniFi ADVANCE PLAN 30Mbps and 50Mbps packages now come with double the uploads speeds, at 10 Mbps and 20 Mbps respectively, without a change to its existing prices.
The updated speeds can be seen on the new Get It Now page (as seen in the image below), but nothing further about the plans can be retrieved from there. The page requires users to put in the correct address, right down to the house/unit number. If, after putting in all the necessary information, the system determines that the UniFi ADVANCE service is not available at that particular location, users will not get to proceed further. Don’t bother about the FAQ page as well, as even the customer facing UniFi Personal page is still showing the old speed. It’s the same situation too on TM‘s Business page but they should be updated before the official announcement; that will hopefully come soon.
The pricing of the plans are still the same at RM 179 (or RM 189.74 with GST) for 30 Mbps and RM 229 (or RM 242.74 with GST) for the 50 Mbps, with TM continuing to mark them as promotional prices (normal prices are RM 199 for the lower tier and an additional RM 50 for the bump-up). What’s missing this time around though is the free first month offer that was there previously.
It’s bad news for those who do not want the bundled HyppTV packages too, as TM is still trying to push their content offering and making it look like they’re free (the fact remains that users already know that the payment for these channels are already included in the internet plan’s pricing). Despite the fact that HyppTV is after all part of TM triple-play services that consists of Internet, Voice, and IPTV services, an option without it would have been great for the consumers. It’s still good to know though that TM‘s partnership with iflix will still at least get UniFi subscribers a kind of a bonus, with a year’s worth of streaming thrown in for free.
In any case, subscribers of the two UniFi ADVANCE plans can still choose (or rather be forced to choose) between HyppTV Aneka Pack or HyppTV Varnam Pack with their subscriptions, or decide to upgrade to a different selection with either the HyppTV Ruby Pack or HyppTV Jumbo Pack for an additional RM 10 or RM 30 respectively. All the other add-ons under the Unbeatable Value tab are still unchanged but then again, the upload speed there has yet to be updated either. We’d have to wait for the official news from TM representatives for the final version for the add-ons, but it’s unlikely that TM will change them.
Taking a quick step back in time, to August 2015, when first queried about the reduced upload speeds at TM‘s info-sharing session, members of the media were assured that TM did an extensive analysis of the current usage trends and that almost 90% of its UniFi users do not even hit the 5 Mbps speeds that was being proposed. It looks like that kind of thinking is already outdated in less than 6 months after the proposal. Perhaps TM is hoping the increase will convince all those fence-sitting VIP 10 users, who have yet to make the move, to finally give in.
