Maxis took a different approach to all-in-one plans with the introduction of its MaxisOne plan, that was introduced at the end of last May. We didn’t think that the MaxisOne plans will be attractive to data users but fortunately for us, Maxis still retains its SurfMore plans for those who only want data. In any case, Maxis has now announced new pay-per-use (PPU) data rate for its subscribers who do not want to subscribe or be tied to any data plans.

Maxis now claims that its revamped PPU data rate is the lowest in the industry. The company now charges RM10 for every 50MB block used. Users can also only go up to 5 block each month, which in turn translates to a maximum of RM50 a month for 250MB worth of data. If users were to exceed the data quota, their speeds will be reduced to 64 kbps but can continue to surf for free. Unused data from each data block will not be refunded once a new billing cycle starts.

The quota will be refreshed on the next billing cycle and Maxis is also providing an additional 250 kB ensure users have a small buffer once they have hit their usage block before being charged. Maxis will also send users SMS to notify them of their usage; there will be one SMS once the PPU is activated, another when 80% usage of each 50 MB blocks used and one last message when all 250 MB of data have been used up. The SMS feature comes on by default and can’t be turned off.

“Based on our findings, more than 1 in 2 postpaid users are not on any data plan. This means that they are exposed to extremely high PPU charges of about 10 sen per 10kB. To put things in perspective, an average music track is about 5MB and will cost about RM50 to stream using PPU charges by other operators. With our new PPU rates, it costs just RM10 per 50MB of usage, which is 98% lower!” said Dushyan Vaithiyanathan, Maxis’s Head of Consumer Business.

The previous PPU rate was 10 sen for every 10 kB used. That will work out to RM10 for every 1 MB. This would mean that PPU users would have previously paid RM500 for every 50 MB used. The new rate is really low and is quite interesting but, if you’re going to continuously use data, we would suggest to go for one of Maxis’s bundled data packages.

The new rate came into effect this month so PPU users should see a reduction on their data charges.
